Alternate treatments, remixes, edits, and an unreleased track from the 1999 debut recording.

You Cannot Come Back

Probably my favorite remix of my own material that I've done. This is basically unrecognizable from the original version of the tune as it appears on Disruption Theory, and takes a very textural, fragmented approach to sound. Even so, EVERY noise here other than drums is an electric guitar, and the drum programming is some of the best I've done.

A shortened version of the album track, done at the request of a contact who asked if I could get the tune down to the 4:30 mark. The original version is nearly 8:30, so it was a daunting task, and involved some judicious editing, including the complete removal of the "Bach" section.

In spite of the vast chunks taken out of it, I really like the concise, to-the-point nature of this version. (Trainspotters, take note: in order to help bring this edit down to under 4:30, I used a different set of solo takes from the ones heard on the album.)

Walking Stick (edit)

Another edited album track. This one more closely resembles the version on the CD, although the 90-second wash of noise at the end was the first thing to go...

You Cannot Come Back
(Redneck mix)

Proof positive that my music is not without a sense of humor (deadpan though it may be). An obscene marriage of rigid tech-step drum & bass with angular guitar riffing, including some guitar parts that didn't make the album version of the track. Charting a common course between DJ dancefloors and trailer-park tank-tops: it's a dirty job, and somehow I volunteered to do it.

The Reason Why (Mobius mix)
(4:34)
RealAudio Stream
An uncharacteristically slow and trip-hoppish track, this is another remix that's pretty unlike its original version; the tempo is considerably slower, and the vibe is not unlike the output of the Ninja Tune label.

The Reason Why (Grid mix)
(5:10)
RealAudio Stream
A very Underworld-esque techno track, of all things, but it holds up well. How unrecognizable is this remix from the original version? When I listened back to the tape recently, it took me a while to remember which tune this was a remix of. It actually developed from the Mobius mix of the same track, which technically makes it a remix of a remix. Got that?

The Difficult City
(8:24)
RealAudio Stream
Originally intended to be a seventh track on Disruption Theory, I changed my mind on this one during the mixing process. I was sad to see some of the parts here gone from the album, but something about the tune didn't quite gel for me, particularly in the context of the CD as a whole. It could be the vague arena-rock aftertaste of the choruses, or the pseudo-punk coda.

Hearing it now, as a seperate entity from the rest of the CD, it's not too shabby at all. It still doesn't belong on the album, though.
